Day Ten: Coming to an End
12-01-18
Activity 1: VE Day!
World War Two had finally come to its conclusion in 1945, after six years of violence. In Europe, and especially New Zealand, huge parties were thrown to celebrate VE Day (Victory in Europe).
If I were to throw a VE Party, it would include:
- A big backyard barbecue with my family and friends
- As well as traditional bbq food, we would also have Kiwiana food including: sausage rolls, fish'n'chips, lamb, paua, crayfish, and oysters.
- Some kiwi sweet treats including pavlova, chocolate fish, pineapple lumps, and hokey pokey ice cream.
- Playing some backyard cricket and shooting some hoops.
- Swimming in the pool.
Activity 2: Making a Fashion Statement
After the war was over, thing starting returning to normal in New Zealand. When soldiers had come home and settled back in, regular life had returned and national sports teams starting playing again, including the cricket team. Men and woman would dress up and go to watch these games.
The clothing worn back then was quite different to the clothing we wear now. Back in the 40's, fashion was quite formal with bland colours, and woman wore dresses, hats, and gloves, while men wore suits and hats. Now, there is much more of a variety in clothing choice, with ranges from comfy sweatpants, jeans, and hoodies, to fancy gowns and suits. Clothing is much more colourful and vibrant now. Although I like the vintage, fancy clothes from the past, I like being able to be comfortable in today's clothes.
Bonus Activity: Sweet Tooth
Bonus Activity: Sweet Tooth
When the war ended, many families from Europe moved to New Zealand for a calmer and safer environment. They brought with them many new foods and recipes, including pizza, hamburgers, and many more.
My favourite sweet treats are orange chocolate chip muffins.
Here is a recipe:
Makes: 12 muffins
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Ingredients
- 2 cups flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/2 cup orange juice
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 1 tablespoon grated orange zest
- 3/4 cup mini-chocolate chips
Directions
1. Heat oven to 200 degrees C. Coat the bottoms of 12 muffin cups or line with muffin-cup liners.
2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
3. In a medium sized bowl, whisk eggs, milk, juice, sugar, oil and zest, and stir in 1/2 cup of the chips. Make a well in the flour mixture, then pour in egg mixture. Stir until dry ingredients are just moistened.
4. Spoon 1/4 cup of batter into each muffin cup. Sprinkle the remaining chips on top. Bake in a 200 degree oven for 20 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.
5. Remove pans to wire rack to cool for 5 minutes. Remove muffins from pan and cool completely on wire rack.
Hey Crystal,
ReplyDeleteThis is Jade C from the Summer Learning Journey team. It's awesome to be back to read and comment on your blog! You are an amazing blogger, keep up the great work! :)
Today's three activities are based on the life straight after the World War. Your VE day has everything that's related to New Zealand - Traditional NZ barbecue, seafoods, pineapple lumps, pavlova, and swimming! Everything you've planned for your party are awesome ideas to celebrate the VE day with your family and friends. I would go to the beach with my friends with some fried chicken and pizza. After that, we would go shopping and come back home with some nice clothes and accessories! I would clean up my house with my family and decorate the house with sparkling fairy lights and other fun decorations to brighten up the house!
Yes, I also like the classy and vintage styled clothes that were worn in the 1940s and 50s. However, I think fashion circles in a loop as the fashion trend in the olden days are starting to influence today's fashion trend. The clothes we think are stylish now, such as ripped jeans, converse & vans sneakers, and midi-skirts, are some things that originated from the mid-1900s.
I love baking sweet pastries and cupcakes! I've baked many different cupcakes last year and I can't wait to try baking with a new recipe that I've never tried! I hope I will have more time in February to be able to bake sweet treats and share them with my family and friends. Have you ever baked at home? If you haven't, you definitely should try because it's a lot of fun! Plus, you get to have nice sweet treats after :)
Well done for completing another set of activities, I really enjoyed reading every single one of them and I look forward to reading more!
All the best,
Jade C.
Hi Jade,
DeleteYour VE Day party idea sounds super cool!
I really like baking and enjoy doing it with my mum at home. My dad and brother eat the majority of it before I can though :)
Thanks,
Crystal
Kia Ora Chrystal,
ReplyDeleteMy name is Georgia and I am the cluster manager for the Kaikohekohe (Northland) cluster. For the next few days, I'll be commenting on students blogs from Uru Manuka and I am very excited to see the work you all have been doing this summer.
I have just had a quick skim over your blog and I am already so impressed with the effort you have put into each activity and the amount of activities you have completed with the programme. You must be very proud of yourself!
What great ideas you have to celebrate VE day! I think that a big barbecue with your friends and family in the backyard is such a great idea. It's my birthday on Thursday and that's how I'm choosing to celebrate.
I love your choice of sweet treat - I don't think I've ever has an orange chocolate chip muffin but I am going to have to try them now! They sound absolutely delicious. Have you made them before? My favourite sweet treat would have to be my flatmates chocolate chip cookies. We heat them in the microwave so they are soft and warm, then add vanilla ice cream.
Ka pai, keep up the great work.
Nga mihi
Georgia
Hi Georgia,
DeleteI hope you have a nice birthday!
I love the ones from Couplands, I've never made them myself though. The chocolate chip cookies sound delicious!
Thanks,
Crystal :)
Afternoon Crystal
ReplyDeleteMy name is Clare and Im part of the Summer Learning Journey, I teach in the Ako Hiko cluster which is in Auckland. So pretty far away from where you go to school. Its great to see all the wonderful work you have been putting in over the Summer and reading the fabulous comments you have been getting.
Reading through and using my imagination of what it would be like to go to your VE party was fun! It would be really incredible coming along. I love how you used the word 'Kiwiana' Such a great iconic word to use for kiwis. Traditional bbqs and loads of food. Sounds exactly like how I would do my VE day too.
YUMBO - Your chocolate chip muffins really made my mouth water. Where did you have your first cupcake. Making them is so fun too. Where did you get your recipe?
I like how you have shared it with an image and also a very clear post about it.
Keep up the great blogging. Don't forget you can comment with other bloggers and comment back with your own comments to get more points and also interact with people from other places.
Can't wait to visit again soon.
Clare
