Day Eight: The Great Depression (The 1930's)
10-01-18
Activity 1: Dealing with Stress
The 30's is when the Great Depression hit America and the world. In New Zealand many people lost their jobs, and predictions have been made that 30% of the population was unemployed. Stress was a big part of most families lives.
I like to relax by reading a book I've either read before and enjoyed, or a new book I find that looks interesting. I also like to go for a quick run to clear my head and de-stress. Listening to happy or calming music can make me feel better, as can watching one of my favourite movies.
Activity 2: Offering a Helping Hand
During the Great Depression it was really hard for people to find work. For families living in the Great Plains of America, farmers didn't have enough money to buy life's necessities as there was a huge drought that lasted the whole period and destroyed most crops.
Some ways I would've helped fund raise for those families:
- Bake sales, sausage sizzles, chocolate wheel
- Skipathon, danceathon, sponsered walk/run
- Car boot sale, fair, book sale
Bonus Activity: Paying it Forward
Near the end of the decade, things were looking up. Jobs were becoming easier to find, and money problems were less of an issue. Though there was now enough to buy necessities, there still wasn't enough for treats and gifts.
If I could travel back in time to the struggling families of the 30's, I would bring back with me:
- Toys for the children
- Clothes
- Fancy soaps and shower gels
- Kiwi themed chocolate: pineapple lumps, chocolate fish, Whittakers L&P
Hey Crystal,
ReplyDeleteThis is Jade C from the Summer Learning Journey :)
It's great to be back to see a lot of activity blog posts, this shows that you are a very active blogger and you are working so hard even outside the school which is fantastic!
Today you've done week 3 day 3 activities, these activities are based on the 'Great Depression' in the 1930s. Because of this sudden depression, people became miserable, sad, and depressed. A lot of people lost their job and they had to face starvation and hunger. Also, many people with illness could not receive the medicine they needed to recover. The prices of food, medicine, houses, and clothing went up but people didn't have enough money to buy them.
Reading a book that you like, going for some exercise, listening to music, and watching a fun movie are all the things that definitely will ease your stress and anxiety. I like to watch comedy movies and hang out with friends to forget about the things that worries me. Also, I tend to eat sweet things like chocolate and ice-cream to lift me up! How about you? Do you like eating anything to enhance your mood?
I love your ideas to raise money for people in need! I also like the cute little picture you have included next to your writing. Selling food, selling goods, and getting sponsored by doing different activities are all amazing ideas that will definitely help you to raise money that you need!
If I could go back to 1930s, I would bring some chocolate bars, Afghan cookies, and some warm clothes and socks! I think your ideas are great because I've never thought of taking soap and toys with me. The people in 1930s would be extremely happy to receive soaps to clean themselves and the children would love to play with the toys.
I really loved reading your activity post, and I look forward to coming back to read more of your other posts! Keep up the good work Crystal :)
All the best,
Jade C.
Hey Jade,
DeleteYes I also love eating sweet things like chocolate and ice cream to cheer myself up. I love dark chocolate, and french vanilla ice cream.
Thanks,
Crystal :)

DeleteHi Crystal.
ReplyDeleteClare here again from the Summer Learning Journey. Its really wonderful to be online and checking out your blog. I love seeing all the positive feedback you have received from others giving you some great ideas.
Destresing and stress management is a really vital tool these days to help us with dealing with lots going on. I love how helpful your ideas were and very practical to others using. Keeping our bodies and mind healthy is so important to our learning and development.
I also love listening to music like you do to help calm me and change how I am feeling about a situation or worry that I might have.
The great depression was a hard time for so many people and especially families. My grandparents went through the great depression and were children at the time. I remember them telling me that there were so many things they were unable to buy or have and small things were really important to them. Lucky we don't live like that now and we are very blessed with a country that is run well by a government that takes care of people if they need the support.
Keep up this wonderful blogging and working hard to complete the SLJ before the end of Summer. Hope you are also getting some sunshine too where you are.
Clare
Hi Clare,
DeleteThank you very much.
That's super cool that your grandparents had lots of stories to pass onto you. Yes we are really lucky to be in a safe and happy country.
Crystal :)
